                         Schongau, Germany

Schongau, a typically Bavarian town in Germany was twinned with Abingdon in 1970. Schongau has a population of 13,000 and lies within easy reach of Munich airport and Augsberg the nearest main railway station.

Schongau is situated on the River Lech and its history dates back 800 years. The town was built on the former Roman road from Augsberg to Italy and has well-preserved perimeter walls. It is within these walls that one can find the treasures of Schongau's architecture and historical buildings. A walking tour of the town is essential for any visitor.

Neuschwanstein Castle built by the melancholic King Ludwig is near Schongau, a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year. It is said that Walt Disney based his fairy castle on Neuschwanstein. Also within easy distance of Schongau, is the picturesque town of Oberammergau famous for the Passion Play held there every ten years.

Schongau has many local arts and traditions and during a visit, depending on the time of year, you may be lucky to be able to join in a Bierfest or browse in the Christmas Market.
